Congratulations to Maya Charcholla for being named Channel 10's scholar-athlete of the week.
Leadership is the backbone of our scholar athlete program and that certainly holds true with this week's scholar athlete.
It's an honor to be named captain of a varsity team, even more so to be the captain for two years, but Maya Charcholla just finished her third year as captain of the Gates-Chili girl's soccer team. She started that run as a sophomore "It was a good challenge for me; working with the older girls; trying to control them; get along with them," Charcholla says. "I like being the glue that holds everything together."
"You have to know your team very well and be compatible with everybody," Charcholla continues.
Not just a top player on the soccer field, Charcholla is also a member of the National Honor Society, and says that her high grades are the result of a lot of hard work.
"I study a lot; always do my homework; always stay after school working with other peers to complete projects; a lot of time and effort goes to school work."
Lots of Maya's time and effort also goes towards volunteer efforts like her work with Relay for Life.
She's helping to organize an event for cancer survivors at the end of the year.
"Interacting with the cancer survivors just pushes me forward and makes me want to help people every day -- directs me to what I want to be."
Congratulations Maya Charcholla, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week presented by Nixon Peabody and the Ide Family of Dealerships.
